Realistic artificial muscles come out: let the robot more flexible

According to the British Daily Mail, engineers at Columbia University have developed a synthetic muscle that can be used in humanoid robots. This 3D-printed synthetic soft muscle discards external compressors or high-pressure equipment used in previous models, pushing, pulling, bending and twisting, and lifting objects a thousand times heavier than itself.

The research team said that at the moment there is not any material that can really be used as a soft muscle. This is due to the inability of all materials to meet the demands of high-strength stress and strain. As a solution to this problem, Dr. Aslan Miriyev, team lead investigator, used a silicone rubber material that contained ethanol in the microbubbles. This solution combines the elastic properties of other materials with extreme volume change attributes and offers the benefits of ease of manufacture, low cost and environmental friendliness.

After creating the shape they wanted with 3D printing, the researchers used a thin wire and 8 volt low voltage electrical stimulation of the artificial muscle. Researchers conducted a series of robotics studies when it showed significant expansion and contraction characteristics. Professor Hod Lipson, Team Leader, said: "Software materials robots are used in areas that require interaction with humans, such as manufacturing and healthcare." The research team plans to replace embedded wires with conductive materials to speed muscle response and extend Service life. In the future, Miriyev said they will explore ways in which AI can manipulate this muscle in the study, which will be "the last milestone" in getting the robot to perform natural movements.
